Genoa in the 19th century between culture and gastronomy. The Ingredients for a New Society

Cultural tourism takes on a 365° mindset. Genoa is emerging as an innovation laboratory for developing cultural dissemination formats focusing on history, culture and culinary heritage.

Attend the "merenda culturale" (i.e., cultural tea break) organised on Friday, 27 October, by the Museo del Risorgimento Mazziniano in Genoa. An exploration of the genius loci of nineteenth-century Genoa with a focus on the links between society and gastronomy, designed by Elena Putti, curator of the Museum.

"Genoa in the 19th century between culture and gastronomy. The ingredients for a new society" will feature lecturers Umberto Curti (Adult Educator, consultant, and essayist) and Alice De Matteo (University of Salerno), with a final speech by Alessandro Cavo (Confcommercio Genova).

The event - free of charge - includes themed refreshments (Torta di Mazzini and traditional cobeletti) and an exhibition of archive letters and historical kitchen artefacts kindly made available by Lino La Iacona.

Luisa Puppo, an expert in intercultural food and wine communication and Honorary Ambassador of Genoa in the World, will provide interpreting services for English-speaking guests.

Advanced reservation is necessary to secure your spot.

Meet the lecturers

Umberto Curti

A profound expert on Ligurian food and wine and handicrafts, a lecturer and author of numerous essays dedicated to the promotion of the territory and its agri-food systems, with particular reference to the history of Mediterranean food and economy (browse www.ligucibario.com for the complete list).

His esteemed research, rooted in social and anthropological sciences, finds its expression in his most important study on prehistoric nutrition, entitling him to the status of 'Narrator of Taste'.

During the event, he will outline his point of view on the daily life of 19th century Genoa, a tale of complacency and criticality, urban revolutions and social changes, cultural life and ethno-gastronomy.

Alice de Matteo

PhD student in Literary, Linguistic and Historical Studies at the University of Salerno, a long-standing regular at 'Casa Mazzini' as a researcher.

On this occasion, she will present the volume 'Padri della Patria. Il Risorgimento tra storia e Cucina (The Risorgimento between history and cuisine) (edited by Andrea De Simone), to which she contributed the essays:

"Il cibo nell'epistolario Mazziniano tra esilio Svizzero e Inglese" (Food in Mazzini's correspondence from the Swiss and English exile) and "Vittorio Emanuele II and his myth: moustache, hunting and cooking'.

An opportunity to learn about the curiosities, tastes and culinary habits of the Risorgimento foursome: Mazzini, Garibaldi, Vittorio Emanuele II and Cavour.
