Noli, a coastal borgo in eastern Italian Riviera

The typical small streets of the village

The fact that Noli belongs to the “Borghi più Belli d’Italia” circuit comes as no surprise.

From Noli, Anton Da Noli, a Genoese nobleman, sailed off to the African coast. Explorers and fishermen, aboard their gozzi - lateen sails, seines – to catch cicciarelli (now this practice is banned by European laws), a small fish, lüssu, a Slow Food Presidium now changed to "traditional fishing", eaten fried and fished with large meshes that do not impoverish the sea.

Behind the coast, the Mànie plateau, fascinating and wild, is an invitation to relaxing walks in the shade of holm oaks. 2021 marks the 700th anniversary of the death of Dante: the Poet mentioned Noli ("Vassi in Sanleo e descendesi in Noli") in the canto IV of the Purgatory. One of the most famous hiking trail is the Passeggiata Dantesca, a loop track goes up to Bric dei Corvi (386 m.) and then, along a Roman road and through Voze, descends back to Noli.

Enogastronomy is the protagonist of the Republic of Taste, during which Ligurian excellences are on stage in Noli’s restaurants. Giuse Ricchebuono’s Michelin one-star Vescovado as well as his Nazionale, which keeps alive tradition (Maria Josè of Savoy sat at these tables), while the Controcorrente is scaling the charts of the Riviera and the renowned Lilliput presides Voze, not to forget about seaside restaurants....

Noli also features a basil plantation…. at the bottom of the sea. “L’Orto di Nemo” is located in underwater biospheres (6 - 16 m.).
