Eating out in the Upper Vara Valley

Vara Valley

Rocchetta Vara stands in the Upper Vara Valley – an inner rural area of the province of La Spezia. This borgo boasts ancient origins: a pre-Roman centre, it later became a monastic settlement and lived through the feudal age straight to the Bonaparte era and the Unità d’Italia. Archaeological findings account for this lively past.

Architecture (military, civil, religious) and nature make the joy of the open-air lovers: hiking, biking and horse-riding are practised along the trails that lead to the Alta Via dei Monti Liguri. Do not miss the verdant pine grove of Suvero closed to the Casoni mountain pass and the interesting restored Palazzo Vinciguerra.

The abundance of chestnut forests and pastures is evidence of rural economy, enlivened by traditions and events. Local enogastronomy displays a set of excellences: wheat (durum and aestivum) is feasted in Suvero in July; honey is a treat; autumn is the season of first-class mushrooms. The protagonists of hearty, rustic cooking art.
